New York, NY- Welcome to Jets Rhetoric where the staff talks about all relevant and irrelevant things about the New York Jets. Here is the latest installment:
The Return of Irrelevancy
Where were you in 1968? If you can say that you weren’t born, like myself, I can tell you for a fact that was the last time the New York Jets won a Super Bowl. If you talk to an elder, they can tell the glory days of Joe Namath, who infamously predicted a win over the heavily favorite Baltimore Colts. That time seems like a prehistoric moment in the existence of mankind in 2013.
Jets fans were teased in Rex Ryan’s first two years, beginning in 2009, as the team’s Head Coach led the team to two straight AFC Championship games. The Jet fan base had finally got a taste of what it meant to be meaningful to the New York media. instead of being the red-headed stepchild to the New York Giants, the Jets had turned the corner. Or so we thought.
The first two years of the Mark Sanchez/ Rex Ryan regime are now apart of that prehistoric time period. The Jets rolled the dice on a kid from USC, who only started for one year, in a ultra talented program and an arrogant, son of a defensive genius who lead a consistently feared Baltimore Ravens defense for years. Quite simply put, the New York Jets overachieved those years and came crashing back down to Earth in the two years to follow. Don’t blame Rex. He can’t make everyone run thru a brick wall for him and there is only so much you can do with an average offense.
The reality is that this year may be Rex Ryan’s undoing if he cannot replicate his first year’s as the teams head coach. The writing is on the wall. The Jets A-Alike, New York Giants, have won 4 Super Bowls since the last time the Jets have. To make matters worst their in division rival Patriots have won 3 Super Bowls, including 14 division crowns. The Jets may be fading into futility if they can’t find a way to right the ship. With the impending trade of Darrelle Revis, fans can only hope that they get something in return that can prevent the inevitable from happening….irrelevancy.
