New York, NY- Though we don’t generally cover College sports, I felt compelled to write this article. Not for the reason that I am a Syracuse Orange fan, but for historic purposes, this was important to discuss. Last night was the last time you will see the rivals of Syracuse and Georgetown play in the Big East Tournament. Jim Boeheim has been a main stay for the Orange with over 30 years of service to the College game. The Legendary John Thompson and his son John Thompson Jr., have made Georgetown a relevant program over the last 25 plus years also.
From the likes of Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and Allen Iverson just to name a few for Georgetown and Earl Washington, Derrick Colemen and Carmelo Anthony for Syracuse, the matchup to look forward to will no longer exist. Sadly for the true college basketball fans, the Big East has become a just “another NCAA conference”. I can only imagine how many fans dream of going to see the Hoyas and the Orange go at each other in the Big East Tournament. Now that dream is crushed because of greed. 34 years of these two teams battling each other, the excitement and competitiveness of the fans…….. gone. All gone.
