New York, NY- Just another random conversation with a New York Knicks fan led me to a clear and concise notion. Carmelo Anthony is not a leader. Anthony will get you 30 per night but won’t lead a team to a championship. As pointed out by a close colleague of mine, the question looms as to why Carmelo was not on the Knicks bench last night? What is the point of traveling back to LA if you weren’t going to give your team some moral support or show them any type of leadership.
Think of it like this. In this era of the modern day athletes, this is exactly why they are seen as being Divas. Why is the superstar of the Knicks so above the rest of the team? Thats on Mike Woodson also. As a head coach your job is to have your stars understand their level of responsibility to their team at all times, regardless of whether they play or not. The difference between Melo and Lebron James is clearly toughness and leadership. Did anyone see Kobe on the sidelines coaching after he came out of the first quarter in the game against Indiana? Thats the leadership and moxie that separates Melo from the greats of today. Chris Paul was on the bench when he was hurt earlier in the season. Heck even Andrew Bynum is on the bench in Philly and we know how many games he has played in.
it seems that Melo is just all too content with just playing in New York. Yeah we can argue about LeBron not wanting to take that role and criticize him for deferring to playing with Dwayne Wade. Yet in reality isn’t Carmelo not being accountable to his team right now? Yes i would absolutely agree that Melo is s once in a lifetime talent but the truth of the matter is, he does not have the “it” factor to make the cast around him better and to lead them, whether he is on the court or injured.
What does this say about the Knick brass? Someone has to get Melo’s neck underneath their arm and teach him a thing or two. Melo was in the Knicks locker room last night watching the game and told reporters that he wasn’t talking about his knee. Where is the leadership in that? And this is the guy that is going to get the Knicks to the promise land? its time to wake up Knick fans, you have all fell for the grand illusions. Thats not leadership, thats an elitist.
